Commission calculator for flat, tiered and quota plans

Pick the plan, enter sales and the rates, and the commission calculator shows what you earn and where it comes from. The example plan pays 5% on the first 50,000 of sales, 7% on the next 50,000 and 10% above 100,000, so $120,000.00 of sales earns $8,000.00 — an effective commission rate of 6.67%, well below the top 10%.

Tiered commission explained

Tiered commission is marginal: a higher rate applies only to the sales inside its band. Reaching a new tier never reduces what you already earned on the sales below it. If the last tier is closed (for example, “100000, 7%” with nothing above it), sales beyond that limit earn nothing; the calculator flags this as a cap.

Quota and accelerators

Many plans set a quota and pay a higher rate once it is beaten. Choose “Quota with accelerator” to enter the quota, the rate up to it and the accelerated rate above it; the calculator shows attainment and the commission earned on each side of the line.

Tracking commissions in a CRM

Commission calculations are only as good as the deal data behind them. Our comparisons cover CRM for consultants, CRM for financial services and the full CRM section.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate sales commission?
Multiply sales by the commission rate: $80,000.00 of sales at a flat 6% earns $4,800.00. Many plans use tiers instead, where each rate applies only to the slice of sales inside its band. In the example, $120,000.00 of sales earns $2,500.00 on the first 50,000, $3,500.00 on the next 50,000 and $2,000.00 on the remaining $20,000.00, for $8,000.00 in total.
What is tiered commission and how is it calculated?
Tiered commission pays a higher rate as sales rise through set bands. It is marginal, like income tax brackets: the higher rate applies only to sales above the threshold, never to everything. That is why the example earns $8,000.00, an effective commission rate of 6.67%, rather than 10% of $120,000.00. Enter one tier per line as “limit, rate%”, ending with “rest, 10%” for the top band.
What is a commission accelerator?
An accelerator is a higher commission rate that applies once a salesperson passes quota. With a 100,000 quota, 5% up to quota and 8% above it, 130,000 of sales earns 5,000 plus 2,400, or 7,400. Choose the quota plan to model it: it shows the attainment percentage and how much of the commission comes from the accelerated sales.
How much do I need to sell to earn a target commission?
Enter a target commission and the calculator works backwards through the tiers. In the example, earning $10,000.00 takes $140,000.00 of sales: $6,000.00 comes from the first two bands, and the remaining $4,000.00 at 10% needs another $40,000.00 above 100,000. If a plan caps commission below your target, the calculator says it cannot be reached.
Is commission calculated on revenue or profit?
It depends on the plan. Most sales compensation is a percentage of revenue (the amount invoiced or collected), but some plans pay on gross margin or profit so that heavy discounting does not pay out. This calculator applies your rates to whatever sales figure you enter, so for a profit-based plan enter the profit amount. Check whether your plan counts bookings, invoices or cash received, and whether refunds are clawed back.
Is my sales data uploaded or processed on a server?
No. The commission is calculated inside this page, everything you enter never leaves your browser, and there is no sign-up. Your inputs are saved only in this browser so they are still here when you come back. That is enforced rather than promised: this site’s test suite scans the shipped HTML for every browser API capable of sending data off the page and fails the build if it finds one.
