Military time converter

Military time is the 24-hour clock written as four digits with no colon: hours 00 to 23, then minutes. This military time converter turns 3:45 PM into 1545 and back, and tells you how it is spoken: “fifteen forty-five”. Midnight is 0000 and noon is 1200.

24 hour time and the military time chart

24 hour time counts the hours from 0 to 23, so there is no AM or PM: 1300 is 1 PM and 1800 is 6:00 PM. The military time chart above lists every hour with its 12-hour equivalent.

Military time to standard time

For military time to standard time, subtract 12 from any hour above 12 and add PM; hours 01 to 11 are AM, and 00 is 12 AM. For working out hours between two times, use the time card calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert military time to standard time?
For military times from 0100 to 1159 the hour stays the same and you add AM; 0000 is 12 AM. For 1200 it is 12 PM, and from 1300 on you subtract 12 from the hour and add PM. So 1800 is 6:00 PM and 1545 is 3:45 PM. Type any four-digit time above and the 12-hour version appears.
How do I convert standard time to military time?
For AM times keep the hour and write it with two digits, and treat 12 AM as 00; for PM times add 12 to the hour, except 12 PM which stays 12. 3:45 PM becomes 1545: 3 PM is 15, then the minutes 45. Enter a time like “3:45 pm” and the military form is shown with the colon version 15:45.
What is 1800 in military time?
1800 hours is 6:00 PM. Any military time from 1300 to 2359 is the PM time plus 12 hours, so 1800 minus 1200 is 6:00 PM. A quick check: 1300 is 1 PM, 1500 is 3 PM, 1800 is 6 PM and 2100 is 9 PM. The chart below the converter lists every hour of the day.
How do you say military time out loud?
Say each pair of digits as a number, and say “hundred” when the minutes are 00. 1545 is “fifteen forty-five”, 0800 is “zero eight hundred” and 0805 is “zero eight zero five”. Leading zeros are spoken as “zero” in military style, and the converter shows the spoken form for every time you enter.
Is midnight 2400 or 0000 in military time?
Midnight at the start of a day is 0000 (12:00 AM). 2400 is sometimes used for midnight at the end of a day, for example “open until 2400”, but the next day starts at 0000 and most systems, including the military, write 0000. The converter accepts 2400 and notes that it means the end of the day.
Is my time uploaded or processed on a server?
No. The conversion runs inside this page, so what you type never leaves your browser, and there is no sign-up. That is enforced rather than promised: this site’s test suite scans the shipped HTML for every browser API capable of sending data off the page and fails the build if it finds one.
