The final exam formula

Your course grade is a weighted average: course = current × (1 − w) + final × w, where w is the final’s weight. Solving for the final gives final = (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w. In the example — 84% now, a final worth 25%, aiming for 90% — that is (90 − 63) ÷ 0.25 = 108%, out of reach, while a B needs only 68%.

What do I need on my final to pass?

The table answers it for every grade at once, including a D (60%) — usually the pass mark — and marks any grade you have already locked in. Change the cut-offs mentally if your school uses different ones: just type your own passing percentage as the grade you want.

How do I calculate what I need on my final?
You need three numbers: your current grade, how much the final counts, and the grade you want. The score needed is (target − current × (1 − final weight)) ÷ final weight. With 84% now, a final worth 25% and a 90% goal: (90 − 84 × 0.75) ÷ 0.25 = 108%. The calculator does this instantly and for every letter grade at once.
What does it mean if I need more than 100% on the final?
That the target cannot be reached with the final alone unless your class offers extra credit — the calculator says it is out of reach. Look at the next letter grade down, which is usually well within range, and check whether any other work is still ungraded, since that changes your current grade.
How much is my final worth?
It is on your syllabus, usually as a percentage such as "Final exam: 25%". If your course uses points instead, divide the final’s points by the total points in the course: a 200-point final in a 1,000-point course is worth 20%.
How do I find my current grade?
Your learning management system (Canvas, Blackboard, Google Classroom, Moodle) usually shows it. If not, use the categories section: enter each category’s weight and your average in it, leave the final blank, and the calculator re-weights what has been graded so far — the same way most gradebooks do — then fills it in above.
What grade do I get if I score a certain mark on the final?
